Incan Girl Who Had Been Frozen For 500 Years

Written By Unknown on Saturday, 20 July 2013 | 07:13

Unearthed in 1999 from the 22,000-foot summit of Mount Llullaillaco, a volcano 300 miles west of here near the Chilean border, their frozen bodies were among the best preserved mummies ever found, with internal organs intact, blood still present in the heart and lungs, and skin and facial features mostly unscathed. No special effort had been made to preserve them.

MUMMIES

The cold and the dry, thin air did all the work. They froze to death as they slept, and 500 years later still looked like sleeping children, not mummies.

MUMMIES

Scientists examine a 15-year-old girl who lived in the Inca Empire, then was sacrificed and remained frozen for 500 years

MUMMIES

A scientist carefully extracts a hair from the sacrificial victim known as the “Llullaillaco Maiden,” in a labroom that is kept at a constant freezing temperature

MUMMIES

The Llullaillaco Maiden’s new acrylic burial chamber is maintained at 0 degrees Farenheit

    1. Well if you really think about it, everybody else who lived then is dead and gone forever as well.

      Oh poor mortals.

    2. By that faulty logic we can kill everyone alive now, because we'll all be dead soon anyway. Fool.

      Delete
    3. Not faulty, and not really

    4. Actually it is faulty, and he's exactly right.

    5. Youreasillyfool, you're far from familiar with logic and definitley not qualified to call people foolish when you're the one strawmanning his statement. That is, unless you're attempting irony.

    7. A live body and a dead body contain the same number of particles. Structurally there's no discernible difference. Only those with life are concerned about preserving it.

      Delete
    8. I think it's more the manner of her death that makes her a 'poor darling'.
Hopefully she wasn't as much of a picky bitch as some of you people.

    9. This is fake, the only way to preserve any tissue is with excessive salt saturation, even in ICE bacteria can thrive, do not believe this fake scientific crap, the only well preserved being ever to existed is Pharaoh of Egypt, 3000+ years old.
Still has all of his features.

    10. Source for your claim Mack? And how much time are we talking, the biggest issue in freezing as far as I know was the damage to the cells.

    12. Considering scientist find frozen Mammoths I can 100% believe this. I think it's pretty amazing.

    13. Yourasillyfool.. Yes you are, and yes we can. It may not be morally correct in your eyes, but yes, it is possible to kill anything that is alive. Duh? And Mack, your clearly just an imbecile. Why would you make. Such a profound statement, without even checking your facts? People like you piss me off, and quite literally are not worthy of the internet. Go back to TV. We'll all be happier for it.

  4. I cannot wait for the days when we are allowed to clone people like these.. Blood still intact in heart and lungs, hair still intact.. DNA everywhere..

    1. What is it that you think cloning will accomplish? It will basically create an embryo that will grow up as her identical twin, what is the significance to that? If you think cloning will resurrect HER, I fear you are sadly mistaken...

      Delete
    2. Ah, no. Cloning her would give scientists even more parts to study and experiment on. They would be cloning an ancient body and be able to observe how it handles certain environments and such. Probably not a very humane idea, but a good one.

  9. Any loss of life is heartbreaking, even more so, the death of a child and to think what she went through before it happened. So sad! I'm glad she was asleep when she finally breathed her last breath. So, Joan Theresa, I'm with you. Some people are cold and unfeeling, others are warm, caring and kindhearted people! Pay no attention to the cold and unfeeling people such as Brad Lavigne...

  16. At the age of 15 she would have been thought of as a middle aged woman, 500 years ago they married and had children by the age of 12. Their life span would have been 30 maybe 40 years at the most.

  20. actually, it was considered a great honor to be a sacrifice to these people. only the most beautiful children were chosen to be sacrificed. they were celebrated and then given some herbal concoction to put them into a deep sleep and left in the mountains to die peacefully and easily. they believed that only the most beautiful were worthy of sacrifice, because after their deaths it was believed they were with whichever god they were sacrificed to- these mummies are a few of 42 children that were found that are thought to be sacrificed to the go Tlaloc.

  23. One talked about cloning? That's fine, but cloning will not bring THIS girl and her essence, her experiences back. A clone will just be a new person with the same cells as the first.

And human life is not that precious. That's a man's ego talking there. In the grand scheme of the universe, a human life is nothing more than another speck in the cosmos. If you want to feel sorry for something and have a good cry, then do so for the planet itself because it has more significance than the humans who over populate it. Personally, I'd get rid of 6.5 billion humans and instruct the others to grow up some and take better care with what they got.

  24. In terms of preservation, what you need is an anaerobic environment. That is one in which there is no oxygen present. This is because the agents of decay (bacteria, etc) cannot live in an environment without oxygen. The problem with ice, as an anaerobic environment for the preservation of organic remains, is that it must remain constantly frozen until it is discovered, in this case 500 years after the person died.

  25. I feel like this would have came up in school when our class was discussing Ötzi the ice man. We were really interested in that nigga and we argued about it for some reason for a whole school day sometimes.
    So...fakeies.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, and by the way human life is precious. As is all life on Earth. And how, Xenoterrains would you select the 6.5 billion to 'get rid of'? Would you be left to make sure the remaining half a million people 'grow up' and learn how to take better care of the planet, or would you offer yourself as a sacrifice, much like this little girl did, for the greater good of the planet?

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is so sad....she should not be displayed....she should be laid to rest. We will remember her by photographs and if you want to do a replica , Fine....but eventually, like soon, she SHOULD be buried in her country and remembered fondly. You scientist do what you need to do so we can understand her past and her culture at that time, but after that, let her go.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh you poor little thing. What did they do to you. The poor girl.

An amazing scientific find, oh but the poor girl.

  31. People need to enter the minds of the people of that time. We say "poor darling" or "poor child" . Maybe she was proud to die for her people. This was the way of life then it wasn't morally wrong, barbaric, and so on. To our eyes in this day and age for us we see it as such. She may have had fear...probably so. I do not know. In that time 15 was not a child but a young maiden. Enter that time if you can assuming one is educated in that culture.

She should be returned to her people if that's their wishes. She serves as more than a scientific miracle for us she served her people first that should be respected. I admit I am fascinated and would love to see her, however coming from a small group of indigenous peoples myself she should be given back.

    ReplyDelete
  32. OK xenoterrans, I propose that for the 6.5 Billion we choose to eradicate we start with all those who, like you, believe "human life is not that precious". In that way we will reduce the number of "instructions " necessary for those remaining. After all it would be most fair to kill those who value life less and more humane to allow those who value it more highly to continue. We might also see less murder, war, and, self destructive behavior, like wastefullness of the environment. - again cutting down on those "instructions" you feel would be needed.

  33. I've studies mummies all my life and the many cultures that practiced mummification. Although, this was not intentional mummification, but sacrifice that led to such due to cold, dry conditions (yes, ice can be dry), this young woman brought honor to her family for being chosen and I'm sure she had a huge sense of pride in herself. I know for a fact that this is not a hoax, I remember when the scientists discovered her in her resting place.

I'm fascinated with them bc when scientific discoveries allow us to look into the almost pristinely preserved faces of peoples that lived hundreds to thousands of years before us, we see first hand their struggles, their lifestyles, their hobbies, their family units, their pains and their scars, we learn more about ourselves as a human race. These mummies are a huge piece of the puzzle that teaches us who we are.

To those with ridiculous comments, maybe it wouldn't hurt for you to turn off MTV and pick up a book, enrich your mind, and become a contributing member of the human race

  34. will she wake up and speak to us, just a hope?

  35. cloning would do nothing more then be a copy he/she might look like its clone but the soul can not be cloned and there for would be different from the original , and to those idiots who spoke filth about the people found how bout respect that was someones daughter(s) remember that when someone talks dirt bout ur 15 year old daughter

    ReplyDelete
  36. Xenoterrains, as long as you're 1 of the 6.5 billion, & I'm not that's fine. Bet you don't want your family and loved ones included in there either.Oh wait.........

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wouldnt cloning her bring forward a set of DNA that was effectively paused for all that time? Un touched by all things that have impacted our own DNA in that gap of time. Seems interesting to me.

  38. If they revive her she's going to need a good chiropractor.

  39. Gotta admit I am slight befuddled here. I believe she could have been frozen and preserved, cryogenics has proven this theory. My confusion enters in the difference of the images. In several she looks murky grey and her face was sunken in. In others like on the hospital bed, she appears to be fat cheeked with no sinkage and good coloring. Explanation please?
